To say that GMP is excited about SXSW is a huge understatement. With months and months of constant build up, the planets are finally set to align in the coming week. The panel that GMP is bringing to the festival is entitled “Can Altruism Be The Next Music Business Model?” and consists of four major players in the music industry:

Peter Schwinge is the general manager of New Music Seminar, a destination where artists, music reps, and companies are provided with tools, knowledge, and connections necessary to becoming successful in building up the New Music Business.

Christopher Tyng is the creative director of The Grow Music Project. He has worked in the music industry as a songwriter, producer, and composer writing music for shows such as “The OC“, “Futurama“, and “Suits“. He has worked with a wide variety of successful bands and artists in Los Angeles spanning across a broad array of genres from reggae to electronica to orchestral.

Anina Moore is the Director of Communications with Texas Commission On The Arts, an Austin-based arts agency working to provide resources that reinforce economic development, arts education, and artist sustainability initiatives in Texas and throughout the country.

Chris Douridas is a well known radio host on KCRW, Southern California’s leading National Public Radio affiliate, featuring an expansive mix of news, music, and information and cultural programming. Douridas also acts as a major Music Supervisor for TV/Film.

For artists and entrepreneurs alike, this is a unique opportunity to hear top industry professionals speak about the idea of having an altruistic approach to the ever-changing music industry. It’s what music should truly be about. To learn more about SXSW and the panel, click HERE.

Joshua brought in his beautiful and haunting song “Is Anybody Out There” and along with the support of amazing musician/drummer Quinn and pedal steel virtuoso Bill Flores, blew us away with his performance. Josh plays just about every other instrument himself on the track, and with Christopher Tyng producing it was a thrill helping this indie-folk-rock inspired track bloom to life in the studio. Stay tuned for the GMP debut of “Is Anybody Out There” soon!

Billboard recently covered the GMP story in an article that’s currently online at www.Billboard.com. Written by Phil Gallo, the article sheds light on GMP’s first round of artists and talks about the altruistic approach the Grow Music Project follows to help these musicians get their music recorded, supported, and noticed. A huge thank you to Phil and everyone at Billboard!
As many of you know, our goal here at Grow Music is to provide a new platform for talented independent artists and bands, where their music is recorded and produced at no cost to them and with no strings attached. It is exciting to see other organizations like The Wreckroom sprouting up around the country geared towards helping indie artists in a similar fashion. In order to spread the word about our project, we’ve put together a strong panel of professionals working in the industry to talk about this new music business model and how it has the potential to push the music industry in a very positive direction. The panel is called “Can Altruism Be The New Music Business Model?“, and our goal is to bring it to SXSW 2014! The following participants will be speaking on the panel:

Peter Schwinge is the general manager of New Music Seminar, a destination where artists, music reps, and companies are provided with tools, knowledge, and connections necessary to becoming successful in building up the New Music Business.

Adam Shore is a key player, event producer, and talent booker with the Red Bull Music Academy, a world traveling music series of festivals and workshops. Shore is also founder of The Daily Swarm, a popular online music news platform for true music fans and media enthusiasts.

Anina Moore is the program administrator with Texas Commission On The Arts, an Austin-based arts agency working to provide resources that reinforce economic development, arts education, and artist sustainability initiatives in Texas and throughout the country.

Being able to bring this panel to SXSW in the coming year would give Grow Music and all of the artists involved great exposure! If you already have an online account with SXSW or already have your badge for 2014, you can navigate to the following link to vote for our panel. We need your help to make this panel happen so please go to the link provided and vote!

****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE****

The GROW MUSIC PROJECT Announces New ADVISORY BOARD at SXSW 2013

Multi-Faceted Board of Industry Professionals add to GMP’s Scope & Outreach

SXSW 2013, Austin, Texas – Christopher Tyng’s GROW MUSIC PROJECT announced the formation of its’ brand new Advisory Board today at the 2013 SXSW Music Conference & Festival. The board is made up of a diverse range of industry professionals, and will help the Grow Music Project expand it’s overall outreach, as well as advise on the selection of artists, and the future development and scope of the program.

The Grow Music Project proudly welcomes to its’ Advisory Board: Trevor Gale, Senior VP Writer/Publisher Relations, SESAC; Stacy Wallen-McCarthy, Director of Music Supervision and Licensing, NBC Universal; Jesse Harris, Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer [Norah Jones, Cat Power, Emmylou Harris, Madeleine Peyroux]; and Bianca Bhagat, music agent at Evolution Music Partners.

“We are honored to have such an amazing resource of talent and experience in the makeup of this Advisory Board”, says GMP Creative Director Tyng. “Each one of these board members brings a unique perspective and field of experience to the GMP table, and we are very excited to have the benefit of their wisdom and their assistance in our development and outreach as the program progresses.”

Created as a “Pay It Forward” endeavor by veteran songwriter, composer, and music producer Christopher Tyng ["SUITS", "FUTURAMA", "RESCUE ME","The OC"] independent bands and artists who want to take their music to the next level but lack the financial resources to do so now have an ally in Tyng’s Grow Music Project. A launch pad for these bands and artists, the Grow Music Project offers selected applicants the opportunity to have their most promising song professionally produced, recorded, and mixed in Tyng’s state-of-the-art recording studio in Santa Barbara, CA. over a two-to-three day intensive development and recording session. The Grow Music Project offers the opportunity entirely for free and with no strings of any kind attached. The Grow Music Project’s goal is to create an outlet to help support emerging artists, just as was done for Tyng early on in his career. The winning musicians will receive the Grow Music Project’s support with absolutely no catch—they will retain all of the publishing and writing credits to their songs, as well as full ownership of the masters from the session. Tyng’s inspiration for the Grow Music Project came from his experience meeting and sharing the lineup with many talented artists and bands while touring and gigging with his own band. Tyng observed firsthand that many deserving indie artists are struggling to break through in the current music market—often because they lack the resources to get their music developed and realized at a professional level. As a young aspiring musician, Tyng himself was taken under the wing of the late world-renowned composer Basil Poledouris. Poledouris helped launch Tyng’s career, and now Tyng’s aim is to do the same for emerging artists with the Grow Music Project. “One of the advantages indie artists have now is the ability to self-market to a theoretically limitless audience,” explains Tyng. “But therein also lies the challenge… The socially-networked world is now your oyster, but how do you stand out? There are great artists being lost in the fray. The Grow Music Project seeks to bring those artists to light, and to create a hub for them to get heard and noticed.” To learn more about the project and the application process, visit www.growmusicproject.com.

The submission deadline for the first round of Grow Music Project applications is May 1, 2013, and the first five recipients will be announced on June 1, 2013. Tyng will select the winning artists with an emphasis on both the strength and potential of their songs, as well as on the artists’ own efforts at advancing their careers. Bands will be responsible for their own travel to the studio, but food and accommodations will be provided. Bands can submit for consideration online at http://www.growmusicproject.com.

SESAC Senior V.P Writer/Publisher Trevor Gale explained SESAC’s support of the project, “Grow Music is a unique and brilliant philanthropic endeavor designed by Chris and Kristin Tyng. The ‘Pay It Forward’ concept is a very creative and productive way to discover, nurture and advance great musical talent and is a wonderful way of giving back. SESAC is honored to support the Tyngs and the Grow Music Project. I, too, have benefited from the ‘pay it forward’ concept, and therefore, believe in it very much!” In addition to having a song fully produced, these artists will be showcased on the Grow Music Project website along with links to their own websites and online profiles promoted. The bands and artists may be offered additional opportunities for advancement and exposure in the Music, Film & Television Industry during the course of their involvement with the Grow Music Project.

Tyng observed firsthand that many deserving indie artists are struggling to break through in the current music market—often because they lack the resources to get their music developed and realized at a professional level. As a young aspiring musician, Tyng himself was taken under the wing of the late world-renowned composer Basil Poledouris. Poledouris helped launch Tyng’s career, and now Tyng’s aim is to do the same with the Grow Music Project. “One of the advantages indie artists have now is the ability to self-market to a theoretically limitless audience,” explains Tyng. “But therein also lies the challenge. The socially-networked world is now your oyster, but how do you stand out? There are great artists being lost in the fray. The goal of the Grow Music Project is to bring those artists to light and to create a hub for them to get heard and noticed.”

Originally from a band background, Tyng has written and produced music and worked with artists as diverse as Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.), Beck, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, X, Juliana Hatfield, David Crosby, Coolio, and CeCe Peniston. As a composer, Tyng has scored more than 45 films and television series including Futurama, Suits, The OC and Rescue Me. “As a composer you need to be a musical chameleon that can digest, adapt, and then utilize all of these different sonic palettes,” he says. “It actually sets you up very well to be a record producer, because—as opposed to an artist who often has to focus on developing one single signature sound—composers have to develop a unique sound and style for each project.” Tyng will additionally contribute his knowledge of the criteria needed for the placement of songs in film and TV, which today is one of the best places for new bands to get noticed.
